¡ÔStory of the Shusse Mochi (Career-Success Rice Cake)¡Õ

Todo Takatora (1556-1630) was a Japanese feudal warlord who rose from an
¡Èashigaru (foot solder)¡É to become a ¡Èdaimyo (feudal lord)¡É.
During his earlier career when Takatora was an ¡Èashigaru¡É, he ran away from his master
and was wondering as a masterless samurai. By the time he came across a Mochi Ya
(Rice Cake Store) at Yoshida-juku of Mikawa Province (current city of Toyohashi, Aichi
Prefecture), he had used up all of his money, but was so hungry that he ordered Mochi and
ate them all. After he finished eating, he honestly confessed and apologized to the Owner
of the Rice Cake Store that he had no money. However, the Owner was a man of generosity
and compassion, who not only forgave him but also gave Mochi as a souvenir for Takatora
and told him to pay him back after he succeeded in life. Takatora was deeply moved by the
Owner, thanked him and left the Mochi Ya.¡¡
Years later, Takatora had succeeded in his career by becoming a ¡Èdaimyo¡É. The symbol of
Todo Family¡Çs Flag is ¡ÈThree White Mochi¡É which has a hidden meaning of ¡ÈOwing three castles¡É.
(The sound ¡Èmochi¡É has a meaning ¡Èto own¡É, and ¡Èshiro¡É means ¡Èa castle¡É, and Takatora is
also famous as an architect for developing innovative castles).
Takatora also revisited Yoshida-juku after becoming a daimyo to return his mochi money and
graciously thanked the owner.
